Thanks for this. I suppose the game is roughly at the level I used to be at when I gave up chess 27 years ago. Now I'm interested again through my 7 year old daughter.

I was impressed that Fritz 11 had few criticisms of either side in your game (I fed the game into it). It didn't mind your early g and h pawn advances at all. If I had been black I would probably have got into time trouble trying to work out a refutation as, like you, I can't believe they're correct play. Fritz claimed 19 Bf3 would have left you slightly better. Its most interesting comment was to point out that 23... Qe3, threatening Rc2, wins the g pawn for black. I wonder if either of you noticed this. But even then it doesn't think black has a winning advantage. It didn't comment on 29...Bxd5, which you see as a turning point in the game. It would be interesting to know where black felt he was better or worse.

How much do you think you're influenced by how you think the game's going? For example you felt positionally outplayed in this game when perhaps you weren't. Maybe you would have looked for different types of move if you had believed yourself slightly ahead (or your opponent not so dangerous or your team in need of a win)?

When you go out to play a game of chess, what do you hope for? A win would be nice, naturally, and I don't suppose many of us would keep playing unless we won a few. But there's little satisfaction in beating much weaker opponents, so we must want more than that. Being made to think, seeing ideas that we haven't seen before, taking the other guy on in a real struggle... isn't that what it's about? How, then, to explain a game like this? White plays the dullest opening he can think of; Black goes along with it. White offers a draw at move 15. Move 15!
